There’s nothing like going on a motorcycle road trip, especially when the sun is out. But with South Africa’s summer ending in just a few weeks, what are the best-rated on-road motorcycle drives in Mzansi?
SANRAL estimates there are 158,124km of paved roads within South Africa. While 21,946 km are operated by SANRAL, the rest are divided between provinces, metropolitan areas, and municipalities.
Arrive Alive claims it is the 10th largest road network in the world. That’s a lot of tar surfaces to explore.
So, where are the best bits to traverse with your road bike?
Let’s start up north.
On-Road Motorcycle Drives Up North
Escaping the “Big Smoke” can be challenging, especially if you plan to leave after work on a Friday. Always remember to check road conditions and weather forecasts before heading out.
But we think these three trips are completely worth it, and they include:
Magaliesberg Meander
An easy escape for city dwellers in Pretoria and Johannesburg, the Magaliesberg Meander is a scenic journey many riders love. Venture through the ancient Magaliesberg mountain range while taking in charming small towns, magical landscapes, winding roads, and much more.
By stopping off at the Hartbeespoort Dam, you can take in the scenic views from the cable car or stop off for a balloon safari. You can’t go wrong with this solid day trip.
Get That Hot-Hot Feeling in Bela-Bela
Formally known as Warmbaths, Bela-Bela is a quaint town located roughly two hours north of Johannesburg.
The name “Bela-Bela” means “boiling-boiling” in Tswana, and as you’d expect it refers to the town’s hot springs which have been drawing in visitors for centuries due to their reputed therapeutic properties.
Fed by waters that originate from the depths of the earth, temperatures in the baths can range from 22°C to 53°C and are rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur.
Bela-Bela is the perfect destination where anyone can unwind and soak up the hours.
Flying Through Dullstroom to The Highlands
If you want a longer ride for a proper escape with added epic flyfishing spots, the Dullstroom area is for you. With rolling hills, pristine dams, and tranquility, the region is known for its open roads.
The town of Dullstroom is also charming and is actually the highest town in the country. Beware, the temperatures are generally lower, and precipitation is higher than in the surrounding areas, especially drier Johannesburg.
Now that we’ve explored the northern regions of South Africa, let’s go down to Durbs!
Riding around Durbs
There’s nothing like exploring the surrounding area of Durban. The region’s lush landscape, stunning coastal vistas, and cultural attractions make it perfect for an on-road motorcycle trip.
Valley of a Thousand Hills
Between Pietermaritzburg and Durban is the Valley of a Thousand Hills. As the name suggests, this valley is full of lush, green hills, and is home to the meandering Umgeni River.
Driving through this scenic area, you’ll be spoilt for stop-off spots. The Valley of a Thousand Hills offers a blend of nature, adventure, and cultural experiences.
Ride Along Side the Dolphins
Traveling north of Durban along the N2 or M4, you’ll ride along the majestic Dolphin Coast.
On this route, you’ll ride through vibrant coastal towns such as Ballito and Salt Rock. Expect to see beautiful beaches, seaside resorts, and more. The North Coast is ideal for inexperienced riders and offers a great mixture of relaxation and entertainment.
Drakensberg Mountains
For those seeking a more adventurous road trip, consider heading west towards the Drakensberg Mountains. While a more extended stay is ideal for exploring the entire range, a day trip can take you to areas like Giants Castle or the Kamberg Nature Reserve, providing a taste of the stunning landscapes, hiking trails, and cultural heritage of the Drakensberg region.
Now that we’ve explored the Kwa-Zulu region, it’s time to go further south.
Going Down to the Western Cape
The beautiful Western Cape has lots of riding options for motorcycle enthusiasts. From the long coastal road stretches to mountain passes, there’s something for everyone.
Cape Peninsula Loop
To start your motorcycle adventure in the Mother City, you can ride the iconic Cape Peninsula Loop in a day.
Riding along the Atlantic seaboard, you’ll pass through scenic coastal suburbs like Camps Bay and Hout Bay. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean as you navigate the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive with its sweeping curves (always check to see if it is open).
Continue towards Cape Point, the southwestern tip of Africa, and visit the historic Cape of Good Hope. On your return, explore the charming naval village of Simon’s Town and the penguins at Boulders Beach.
This loop perfectly combines coastal beauty, mountainous landscapes, and cultural experiences.
Route 62 and Tradouw Pass
Head east from Cape Town to experience the historic and scenic Route 62, often called the “R62.” This route takes you through picturesque Winelands, charming small towns, and striking mountain passes.
A highlight of this trip is the Tradouw Pass, a winding mountain road surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains. Stop in towns like Montagu and Barrydale for their quaint charm and hospitality. The journey on Route 62 provides motorcyclists with diverse landscapes, from vineyards to rugged mountain terrain.
Swartberg Pass and Prince Albert
For a challenging and visually stunning ride, venture north to Oudtshoorn and tackle the Swartberg Pass.
This UNESCO World Heritage site offers thrilling twists and turns as it takes you through the Swartberg Mountains. Once at the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Little Karoo.
Continue to the charming town of Prince Albert, known for its Cape Dutch architecture and vibrant arts scene. The return journey can take you through the Meiringspoort Pass, adding even more scenic variety to your ride.
