As we all have experienced, COVID-19 waves come and go, and our driving frequency usually varies in line with this. As such, some cars may be left standing for extended periods and this begs the question – how do we ensure battery care during this time?
Here are some tips for taking care of your car battery during COVID-19 lockdowns
When leaving your vehicle, ensure all electronics in your car are switched off and that all doors are shut correctly.
- If you’re not using your car frequently, start it every day and run the engine for 5 minutes in an open space or with garage doors open for safety reasons. Smart chargers are nifty little things and it’s recommended to use a smart charger for battery care.
- Where possible, park the car in a cool area to prevent exposing the battery to high ambient temperatures and consequent high self-discharge.
- If you suspect a problem with your battery, do not try to open it, revive it or fill it- rather contact your closest Willard Battery Xpress who will be able to assist you.
- If you can measure the voltage of the battery (with a voltmeter) and can easily access the battery, measure the voltage every few days. If the voltage drops below 12.6V, it will need to be recharged by running the vehicle for 10 minutes.
- In instances where the car won’t start, always remember to follow the vehicle and battery care instructions from the manufacturer’s jump-starting or push-starting guide, and run the vehicle for at least 15-30 minutes to recharge. If the battery is damaged and not just discharged, this may not help.
Want to know the signs that your battery is on its way to battery heaven and that it may need to be replaced?
- You hear grinding or a clicking sound when you turn the ignition.
- The engine does not swing at all when you turn the ignition.
- Your vehicle cranks slowly when attempting to start.
- Your headlights dim when idling but brighten when you rev your engine.
